Coffee is prepared from rosted grinded coffee beans, it’s trees generally found in Africa and some islands in southern Asia. There are 50 known species of coffee beans and they all produce different quality of coffee.

Coffee is the #2 source of caffeine, the amount of caffeine you can get from a single cup of coffee is up to a 100gms, however, this amount varies due to other factors such as the the type of coffee bean, the roasting procedure and your choice of coffee.

Caffeine: I’m sure you know that too much of any this is a mess, well that is true, you see caffeine is a substance commonly used as a stimulant (energy)and one of the very few that have been proven to help you burn fat by releasing fatty acids from fat tissue. As much as caffeine is great for getting the extra help you need to kick start your day, you should know your limits. You don’t wanna be shaking like the girls in Beyoncé single ladies music video do you?

Different kinds of coffee; There are 5 main types of coffee choices which you can find at your local coffee shop, such as dripped coffee-brewed coffee- instant coffee-brewed decaf and instant decaf.

Caffeine content per 200 ml cup of coffee

  • Dripped coffee 100-170 mg
  • Brewed coffee 70-125 mg
  • Instant coffee 55-90 mg
  • Brewed decaf 4-5 mg
  • Instant decaf 3-4 mg

A single cup of coffee contains; 11% B2 vitamin, 6% B5, Potassium & Manganese 3% & vitamin B3 2%

Health benefits of coffee: Did you know that coffee has chemicals that may help reduce certain chronic diseases? Well studies show that by drinking 4 cups of coffee per day you could lower your risk of the following life threatening illnesses;

Breast cancer; Women who drink up to 4 cups of coffee per day may lower the risk of breast cancer by 57%.

Stroke;Drinking at least 1 cup of coffee may lower the risk of stroke in women, men may need to consume at least 2-3 cups.

Prostate cancer; According to This study  consuming 4 or more cups of coffee per day may reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men by 30%. Type 2 Diabetes by 25-50%,Parkinsons disease by 60% Alzheimers by 65% & liver disease.

Type 2 Diabetes affects more than 300 million people worldwide. 1 in every 11 adult has Diabetes, every 6 seconds a person dies from Diabetes resulting in about 5 million deaths per year, world health organisation predicts that by 2030, Diabetes will be th 7th leading cause of death

According to Research coffee has high antioxidant levels that are beneficial to your health. However, it may also cause side effects, recent studies shows that drinking too much coffee may cause heart problems.

Risk factors of drinking excessive amounts of coffee includes: High blood pressure- Heart and blood vessels disease ( Plasma Homocysteine). Symptoms include; low  B-6, B-12 & Folate vitamin levels, and Renal Diseases.

Safe intake amount is 3- 4 cups per day, children and pregnant women should refrain from drinking coffee, however studies show that expecting mom’s are allowed to have 1-2 cups of coffee per day.

When should you drink coffee: Did you know that drinking coffee very early in the morning is bad for you? Well I didn’t either, anyway this study shows that the best time of the day to drink coffee is between 10am – 12:30pm & from 2 pm to 6 pm. The study also concludes that you should also refrain from drinking coffee at least 3 hours before bedtime.
